We will Restore!

On Tuesday, January 10 the historic Connelly Harrington House caught fire. This building has been used for many different purposes over the years--at one point in time it was even a hospital. Currently it houses Drake Renovation and Construction, Inc., a few other local businesses, and some small apartment units. While we all feel sadness at the damage done to such a historic building, we are grateful no one was hurt. Our wonderful fire department made sure everyone was out and even took some time to think about how to minimize damage to the building while fighting the fire! Yet another reason our Downtown is such a wonderful place!

Shortly after the fire, this sign went up in front of the building. It reads:

We will Restore!

"The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former..." Haggai 2:9

That's right, renovations have already begun! Drake Renovation and Construction, Inc. is diligently and lovingly hard at work.

While a fire is nothing to be thankful for, I am thankful this building is being cared for. I am also confident it will be better than before! I might be the worst blogger in our little town--sorry about that! Never fear, there's still time to head Downtown and do your Valentine's Day shopping!

On Saturday, February 11th, from 10am-Close, as a thank you to local shoppers, downtown merchants are offering treats, special deals and discounts to local shoppers!

Order flowers, buy a gift certificate, get a local piece of art and have it custom framed! There's jewelry, handcrafts, candles and more to be found.

Each participating merchant is offering something extra on this day. Ask about "Finding Love Downtown" when you visit the store. Also, look for the "punch card" as you shop, listing participating stores. Vist five stores and get a signature at each - leave it at the fifth to be entered in a drawing to win a gift certificate to a local shop!

Parade Preparations

The other day I popped into The Cafe on Broadway for a cup of tea.

It happened to be the day the Light Up Siloam Christmas Parade lights were being hung.

Feeling quite festive, I sipped my tea while looking out the window.

Only a few more days until Santa makes his way down Broadway Street...

It seems Creative Corner on Broadway held a camera class. Here's a picture of the participants taking their pictures.

I'm not sure if Creative Corner on Broadway is having another camera class in the near future, but I think I'd better head down there to check it out. You might want to stop by, too. I've heard there is all kinds of fun holiday items to make your scrapbook (or crafting) extra festive.

...wanted to let you know that the next Art/Music Event at Pour Jon's is on November 19th at 6pm. We hold one every month, always on Saturday evenings. Anyone who wants to can take the stage to sing or play an instrument, while artists sit around and do their thing. We have teens who weave bracelets, ladies who knit, and college kids who do graphic design. My sisters and I all draw and paint. A little something for everyone. --Wendy

My Quilting Adventures at Sager Creek Quilts and Yarnworks

This is a guest post from my good friend Joy. Welcome, Joy! Thanks for the post.

Morning friends! For the past couple years, I’ve been learning how to quilt. A lot of my inspiration comes from beautiful quilting blogs, but many of my skills have come from our local quilt shop.

I started by taking an appliqué class. My mother-in-law fell in love with these Swedish folk art designs. As a thank-you for all the fabric and buttons she had passed on to me, I wanted to make her a table runner. However, the class was going to sew a cat—a cat! Anyone who knows me well knows I am NOT an animal person. I sheepishly asked if I could bring my own pattern. Of course you can. Perfect.

I did a tester piece for the class which is going to become a round pillow once I learn the best method to insert a zipper.

The finished gift!

The class was so fun! I felt like I was in kindergarten playing with glue and scissors. The class ran from 10 am – 3 pm. Pam taught the class, and Cliff cooked all of the class participants lunch. All for the low price of $30, complete with homemade dessert from Cliff's Tea Room cookbook!

(Call 524-5244 or stop by for what you need to bring with you.) Be on the lookout for a post about the Beginning Quiltmaking class offered at the end of the month. Oliver the Toad

Books on Broadway hosted a book signing for local author Dawn Denton on Saturday, September 24th.

Dawn was there to read her books.

We also took a few minutes to have her sign a few books for upcoming gifts. (Hint, hint...Christmas is coming! And Downtown is the perfect place to find a special something!)

Oliver the Toad is an adorable book--the second book in a series of five about guests in our gardens.

Dawn even brought along her toad house to inspire us to make our gardens more toad-friendly.

Stay tuned! Dawn's up and coming book (about a ladybug) will be out soon. I'm pretty sure Books on Broadway will invite Dawn to have another signing.

Weekend Plans

Homecoming Parade

On Friday we headed Downtown to watch the Siloam Springs High School's Homecoming Parade.

We especially enjoyed the flags.

The band was wonderful--as always! Did you know they're headed to the Rose Parade this upcoming New Year's Day? Yes, they're that good!

The girls' dresses were quite pretty, but these two little ones stole the show in their fun Bug!

This year's homecoming parade was a success!

A few weeks back, KLRC packed up their SUV and moved Downtown!

We're so glad they're here.

They're glad to be in the neighborhood as well. To celebrate they're throwing a party, and you're invited!

Learning in the Park

Yesterday morning the local CHESS group (Siloam Springs home schoolers) met Downtown near the Gazebo for a Nature Notebook session.

Local author Dawn Denton read two of her books (Ruby and Rocket and Oliver the Toad--both available at Books on Broadway) and shared with the children some ways to make their backyards places where hummingbirds and toads would want to live.

The children made notes in their notebooks while Ms. Dawn was sharing.

Then they painted toad houses to put in their backyards.

At the very end of the session, Dawn let us in on a little secret. This picture is from her book titled Ruby and Rocket. Does the fountain look a little familiar?

Yes? Well, you're right! Dawn specifically asked her illustrator to draw a fountain like our fountain. It's just a little something special for the children who spend time in Downtown Siloam Springs.

Look and Listen

KLRC is happily settled in their new home Downtown. It's fun having them here.

From the street you can look in the studio windows and actually see what is happening on air. Pretty fun, huh? Even more fun is the button to the left of the door. Push the button and you can hear what's happening in the studio! It's a great feature.

Do you follow the Cafe on Broadway on Twitter? If you don't, you might want to start. It's how I find out about all kinds of things going on down there. If Betty has something yummy coming out of the oven or if they get a new gift item (like a new color of teapot), they typically tweet about it tempting me to head Downtown. (Just between you and me, it doesn't take much to convince me!)

Today they tweeted the following picture showing their new seating area.

It's located just behind the cafe and will be perfect for our upcoming fall weather. And boy am I ever ready for fall!

Weekend Plans

Sign-up for the program began June 6th and is still happening! Pick up your reading logs, and get started on the summer fun!

Join friends at the library on June 14th @ 2:00 pm for their kick-off party with live bluegrass performers, old-school games and sign up, then pack your bags and begin your journey. This summer travel to China, Israel, England, India, and Ireland. Celebrate with Cherokee music and storytelling.

My family and I have been busy lately. Hence my absence on the web. With all the business, we're ready for a break. Lucky for us, there's a TON going on Downtown this Saturday. It's time for fun!

Get your morning started with a cup of coffee or tea from Pour Jon's before heading over to the 34th Annual Fishing Derby (begins at 7:30am). My boys love this annual event. Stay for Farmer's Market (opens at 8am). It's Kids' Day this Saturday, so be sure to bring them along. The scavenger hunt (with prizes) along with other activities begin at 10am.

You'll probably be hot, thirsty, and hungry after playing and picking out vegetables and granola at the market, so head to Cafe on Broadway next. They've got cold drinks and yummy lunches!

Then it's rest time. :-) Stop by the Library and pick up a few books before heading home.

If resting isn't your thing (it's certainly not mine!), perhaps a little shopping is in order... Amy's Closet, Four Corner Frames, Amandromeda. Local Flair, Two Gals Junk, Siloam Flowers and Gifts, and more!

Time for dinner! Fratelli's or Emelia's are both good choices! Grab a dessert to go and head out for the evening activities...

*There's a play at the Sager Creak Art Center. The Kitchen Witches is playing this weekend.

*Second Saturday Music is in the park! Yay for Cobb Brothers Bluegrass Band!

Bodies tired and memories full of fun, it will be time to head for home. Rest up, though, because there's always something happening on Broadway Street!

Preparations

Preparations are being made for KLRC's move Downtown.

They've been installing equipment on top of the Houston Enzymes's building. Being one of the tallest buildings Downtown, it's the perfect place to catch the "waves" (radio waves, that is!).

While on a walk Downtown, I handed my camera to my 5 1/2 year old. It was fun looking through the pictures later to see what he notices while we're Downtown.

Weekend Plans

This weekend we're supposed to have beautiful weather. Why not head down to the Farmer's Market (open 8am-1pm) before heading to Pour Jon's for a quick lunch. I've heard they now serve sandwiches! I need to get over there and check things out.

After lunch, why not head on over to the low water bridge.

I took my boys over there earlier this week. It's so nice to have a sidewalk; it makes watching the water much safer. Can you see the debris left by the high water from the storms? Crazy!

The Cafe Caters

Quick! While there's a break in the weather, head Downtown! It's what we did yesterday morning. It was awfully nice to have a break before more storms headed our way.

We stopped by the Cafe on Broadway for a quick treat. The cafe girls were busy packing up a catering order. Isn't it beautiful? Looking at those lovely chicken salad sandwiches and salads with cheery oranges made me want to have an event just so I could serve fun lunch boxes!

Remember the Cafe on Broadway for your next catered event.

And if you don't have an event planned, now's the perfect time to grab your calendar. You could be just days away from a cute box lunch!

Rainy Day Walk

The weather forecast predicts more rain for today. If those raindrops let up for a bit, I'm heading Downtown for some fresh produce at the Farmer's Market and a quick walk up and down Broadway Street.

I saw on Main Street Siloam Springs facebook page that Dr. Allison's Dental Office has a new coat of paint. The historic building was built in 1884 and the fresh paint really shows off the details in the facade.

I think I'll walk past and check things out for myself!

And then I might take my boys on over to the creek. Rain days are good duck feeding days. Plus, I've heard the low water bridge is finished...

I don't know about you, but after a few days of beautiful weather it's nice to have a little rain! Having been outside most of the week, it's nice to think of a few days inside catching up on crafts and sipping tea. Fortunately both of those things can be done Downtown this weekend.

Crafting:

*Creative Corner on Broadway has a Saturday Scrap Night. (By the way...Julie has new graduation themed papers. Perfect for scrapbooking pictures of your graduate.)

*Sager Creek Quilts and Yarnworks has a Saturday class titled: Color and Fabric Selection. It's being taught by published author Donna Thomas.

Tea Sipping:

*Cafe on Broadway is always a good place for a cup of tea followed by a bowl of warm soup.

*Pour Jon's also has quite the selection of tea and typically has live music playing on the weekends.

So...get out and enjoy some rainy-day activities this weekend! If crafting and tea sipping don't happen to be your idea of a good time, there's always eating, shopping, and reading. Regardless of what you choose...

Dogwood Festival Recap

Well, believe it or not, I didn't make it to the Dogwood Festival. Word on the street is the festival was lots of fun this year. I planned to go, but my weekend went crazy on me and I never made it Downtown. Good thing the Dogwood Festival is an annual event.

Weekend Plans

It's going to be a big weekend! There are two major events going on Downtown.

The Dogwood Festival kicks off Friday morning! The festival will continue through Sunday afternoon.

This morning we saw people marking off the booth spaces in City Park.

Lots of Downtown businesses are having specials during the Dogwood Festival. You might want to head to the Downtown Businesses tab to find links to the different websites (There's the book sale at the Library, the book signing at Books on Broadway, extended hours at the Cafe on Broadway, etc.). There's lots of fun to be had! Oh, and remember to find the Main Street Siloam Springs, Inc.'s booth at the Dogwood Festival; Farmer's Market stickers can be found there among other things.

And then there's The Royal Wedding. :-) Friday morning action is happening at The English Tea Room. After spending the morning there, I'm sure you'll be feeling rather English. Keep that feeling going by heading to Pour Jon's for a cup of tea...

...and then head down the street for a British flag notecard at Amandromeda. Did I mention I'm excited about The Royal Wedding? :-)

Regardless of which events you choose to attend, it's bound to be a fun-filled weekend!

Honey

Due to the weather, the Farmer's Market was small yesterday. It didn't bother us one little bit; we still had a great time!

We headed on over to the honey table and learned all kinds of things, and we came home with some sweet goodness for our morning oatmeal!

The honey is from hives located 17 miles from Siloam Springs in Summers, Arkansas. I've heard quite a few of my friends mention eating raw, local honey helps with their allergies.

There were also beeswax candles for sale. Those bees are busy!

But our favorite part was the video. The farmers brought their laptop from behind the table and showed my boys footage of some bees swarming. The beekeepers somehow found the queen and convinced them to start a new hive. Quite fascinating!

Our time at the market this morning is a perfect example of why I love that our Downtown has our own Farmer's Market. I enjoy getting to know the vendors and farmers and hearing about where the food we'll be consuming actually comes from.

The Royal Wedding

You might be wondering what the Royal Wedding has to do with Main Street Siloam Springs. I know my husband is probably wondering just how I'm going to connect the two subjects. Thanks to The English Tea Room located in our very own Downtown, it's really rather easy!

(By the way... It seems Kate and William have had a bit of rain just like us--yet another connection!)

That's right fellow British Royal Family Fans, it seems we're making the news with our local festivities! Brilliant, simply brilliant! Here's what The English Tea Room has to say:

40/29 News will be filming live from The English Tea Room all day, starting At 4:30am on Friday 29th of April and will be here most of the day. This is forming part of their coverage of The Royal Wedding, We will Be serving free breakfasts to the first 100 people approximately through the door. Once it's gone it's gone.

Rain and the Market

We've had quite a bit of rain these past few days. And it's still raining! Oh my!

Here's a picture of Sager Creek taken near City Park where this weekend's annual Dogwood Festival will be taking place. (Picture taken at 2:30 this afternoon.)

Farmer's Market in City Park on Saturday from 8am-1pm.

Emelia's is taking reservations for Easter meals. Find them on the Businesses Tab and give them a call.

Speaking of Easter... The Dogwood trees are in perfect bloom. If your kiddos are dressed in their Easter best, it might be fun to head Downtown and get some pretty springtime pictures.

Amy's Closet

Amy's Closet is now open for business!

The other day I headed over to check the place out. I knew Amy's Closet was in a fun location in the Connelly Harrington House at the corner of Broadway and University Streets, but that was all I knew. It can be a bit tricky to find. Never fear, I'm here to help! Just in case you, too, were wondering exactly how to find Downtown's newest shop, I took my camera along and took step-by-step pictures.

Step One: Find the Connelly Harrington House.

Step Two: Head up the steps.

Step Three: Midway up the steps turn left at the sidewalk.

Step Four: Follow the sidewalk around to the side of the building.

Step Five: The sidewalk takes you to a short set of steps leading you directly to Amy's Closet.

Step Six: At the bottom of the steps there is a pink door. Open it and...

...head on in! There are a few rooms, but before you check them out take a minute to peruse the rack pictured just below.

It's where I found a pair of shoes! I'm pretty sure they hadn't ever been worn, and at $5 they were a necessary bargain.

Anytime is a perfect time to visit Amy's Closet.

Opening Day

This year's Farmer's Market opened yesterday with a chilly morning! Favorite farmers were welcomed back along with some new vendors sure to become favorites!

I picked up some baby bok choi, onions, and spinach. The radishes and dill looked lovely as well.

Grannie Frannie's Granola was giving away granola samples at their table. Grannie Frannie's is one of this year's new vendors. One sample of her granola and you'll be hooked! YUMMY!!! The granola we purchased at the market is gone-as in not one oat left in the compostable container! (Yep, they use eco-friendly packaging; cool, huh?)

Granola will be at the market every Saturday and hopefully most Tuesdays. (PS: I heard that if you "like" Grannie Frannie's Granola on facebook, there is a chance for some free granola at some point in your future.)

Brenda Welch's fresh bread is also making its debut at the Farmer's Market this year. We picked up a loaf of half-white-half-wheat this week. We also sampled the herb variety as well (which was sold out by the time we arrived). Brenda is happy to take special orders.

The flowers were beautiful! I picked up a few to add to the pots on my deck.

I'm so happy our local Farmer's Market is open for the season! Make plans to head to City Park on Tuesday. The market is open from 8am-1pm.

Last Minute Reminders

Siloam Springs Farmers Market opens tomorrow in City Park (near the gazebo). Vendors will be selling veggies, jams, granola, and lots more from 8am-1pm.

And, this just in...

Andrew Haught will be playing old time banjo music at Pour Jon's tonight at 6:30 pm. Sounds like the perfect way to spend a chilly spring evening!

Weekend Plans

It's going to be a fun weekend Downtown. I'm excited!

I'm planning on taking my oldest son to see Pollyanna. This delightful play is on stage at the Sager Creek Arts Center. Two of our very good family friends are acting in the play making it even more special for our family. We might even start the evening off with appetizers at Emelia's before heading to the Arts Center. The play shows both Friday and Saturday evenings. Remember to click on the Downtown Businesses tab to find the sites for Sager Creek Arts Center and Emelia's; details regarding tickets and contact info can be found there.

Then on Saturday morning we're heading to City Park for opening day at the Siloam Springs Farmer's Market! Yay! We are excited! This year's market will be open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8am-1pm. Grab a basket and head Downtown to stock your fridge with fresh veggies. Yum!

Punch Cards and Book Signings

Books on Broadway now has punch cards! This is a good thing at my house as we're in the habit of buying books. Head Downtown, buy a book, and get your first punch. It's fun!

In other Books on Broadway news, local author Dawn Denton's second book is out and ready for signing. Her first book (above) titled Ruby and Rocket is one of my boy's favorites! We're looking forward to the release of book number two (in the series of five) titled Oliver the Toad especially because we've been catching toads in our backyard this spring.

The book signing for Oliver the Toad is will be on Saturday, April 30th at Books on Broadway from 10:30-11:30am. Mark your calendars and plan to attend this fun event before heading to the Dogwood Festival.

Things have been a bit dusty around here!

We're in the process of trying to make things a bit more organized on the blog. There is still work to do, but in the meantime...

As for now, all this work has made me tired! I'm off for a Downtown stroll and an icy drink at The Cafe on Broadway. They open at 5:30 this evening; what a great evening to sit on their sidewalk enjoying a drink and a pastry.

Weekend Plans

It's predicted to be a nice weekend weather-wise! Here are a few things I have planned...

*A walk Downtown with my family. We're planning to browse Siloam Flowers and Gifts. They opened at their new Downtown location this past Monday.

*A visit to Local Flair Art Gallery. They're having a photography exhibit this weekend. Simply Lovely by Heather Foley will be on display. Please stop by anytime on Friday from 6pm-8pm, Saturday from 10am-4pm, or Sunday from 1pm-3pm. I'm excited to see Heather's creativity.

*Taking some time to look through my cookbooks finding recipes for FRESH PRODUCE! Yum!!! The Siloam Springs Farmer's Market opens for the season on Saturday, April 16th. This year's Market will be taking place every Tuesday and Saturday morning from 8am-1pm. Yes, you read that right: a Saturday market! We're so excited about this change in days! Please help us get the word out as this has been a recent change.

*And, last but not least, I'm planning to spend some time making a few changes this blog: The Word on Main Street. I'm sure you noticed a few under construction signs around here. Hopefully things will soon be neat and tidy once again.

KLRC is on the Move

John Brown University had a big announcement today. Their radio station KLRC is moving its studio Downtown!

KLRC Finds New Home in Historic Downtown Siloam Springs

Siloam Springs, Arkansas (April 5, 2011)

101.1 KLRC, a ministry of John Brown University, is moving to a new home in historic downtown Siloam Springs. The facility, located at 110 North Broadway, will be purchased to meet the growing need for additional offices, studios and parking and is a convenient location for listeners to visit. Currently KLRC is operated out of a building located on the west side of the main JBU campus in Siloam Springs.

“We’re so excited about becoming a part of the downtown Siloam Springs community,” said Sean Sawatzky, KLRC General Manager. “We’ll be setting up our main studio so it’s visible from Broadway Street. We’re hoping to give the people of Siloam Springs yet another reason to spend time downtown.”

This will be the third location the station has occupied in its history. When the station launched in 1984, it was located on the first floor of the Learning Resource Center near the center of campus. As the need for space became an issue, the station moved to its current location in 2002. Sawatzky said the station will move to its downtown location in early summer.

“This opportunity is a win-win for KLRC and Siloam Springs,” said Kim Hadley, vice president for finance and administration. “We see this as our chance to give KLRC the space they need while expanding our connection with the community.”

April Showers Bring May Flowers

We've certainly had April showers this week. I'm hoping it means we've got the May flowers coming soon.

I happen to enjoy the rain, so I grabbed my umbrella and headed out to check on the bridge progress.

Near the bridge the Siloam Springs Library is set in a lovely location.

The redbud trees are out in full bloom with daffodils showing their happy faces just below. So pretty--especially on a grey day. I think what some refer to as 'dreary days" only enhance the colors nature has to share.

The arch detail on the bridge is quite pretty. I'm eager to have the project completed!

I hope you feel inspired to get out and take a walk this weekend.

This past Thursday Pour Jon's Coffee & Tea Company opened for business. I stopped by for a visit this morning, and I'm happy to say Downtown Siloam Springs' newest business is quite charming and welcoming with a fun European flair!

I so appreciate the attention to details. Every corner is worth taking a peek at. The phone booth is high on my list of favorites!

And the mouse in the corner...well, he made me smile on my way out the door.

Pour Jons is open from 7am-2am. Yes, you read that right; basically anytime you feel like coffee or tea they're open. There are also a few food items on the menu. Head on over to 270 N. Wright Street and see all that Pour Jons has to offer.

Custom Brick

Have you noticed the Custom Bricks lining the sidewalks? Have you ever wondered how you can have your name be forever a part of Downtown?

This past weekend I learned that what is now home to Main Street Siloam Springs, Inc. and Drake Renovations (Connelly-Harrington House) used to be a hospital. Were you born in that hospital; wouldn't it be fun to have your name on a brick just outside the building? Or perhaps your husband proposed on a summer evening Downtown stroll? Commemorate your special memory with a brick!

Click on the Main Street Siloam Springs, Inc. logo to the right and search for the "custom brick" tab. Fill out the form, and you, too, can be a piece of Downtown Siloam Springs history.

Quilts and Lunch

Does anyone remember back to the days when Sager Creek Quilts and Yarnworks used to serve lunch? I sure do! And every so often my mouth waters for some a bowl of their soup and a plate of salad followed by a delicious cocoa roll smothered in whipped cream. YUM! My mouth is watering...

Anyway, the other day I was looking around on the quilt shop's website, and I happened to notice two little words on the class schedule: lunch provided. Having never taken a class, I'm not sure what that means exactly. But I'm wondering if signing up for a class might allow me another taste of that delicious creamy dill dressing sitting atop a piece of crisp lettuce or tomato... Who knows, but I'm planning on finding out!

There are lots of classes listed on the website's calendar (Click on the quilt shop's link in the Downtown Business section on the right). Here's one that interested me:

Creative Corner on Broadway is having a class this Saturday. The class is titled It's that Simple! Here's the scoop from Julie:

Second Saturday Music

I look forward to Second Saturday Music every summer. My family and I are planning on grabbing a to-go dinner from one of the Downtown eateries before heading over to the park where we'll settle in for a picnic waiting for the music to get started. It's a fun mid-weekend activity for locals of all ages. This year's line up looks incredible! Here's who will be playing:

Come hear music from the Gallier Brothers from Springfield, MO. Having performed together fro over twenty years, Les and Gary Gallier are well known and admired among the mountain dulcimer and folk musicians, particularly for their unique playing styles and blend of various music genres.

The Cobb Brothers Bluegrass Band will take the stage. Fifteen year old Caleb Cobb is joined by his younger brothers, Samuel - age fourteen, and twelve year old Nathan. The Cobb Brothers of Mountain View, Arkansas are regular performers at the Ozark Folk Center, entertaining audiences on a variety of stringed instruments, along with vocals and comedy.

The last concert of the season will feature Missouri musicians, Rick Reding and and the White River Music Company. White River Music Company was started by Rick Reding as an outlet for his original music, and to help other musicians in the Ozark Mountain region to have an outlet for their fine music and song creations. Recently, the band acted and performed in the Robert Redford Sundance film festival's Grand Jury prize-winning Oscar-nominated film, "Winter's Bone."

The Low-Water Bridge

Updated: Yes, this bridge is located just east of the library. Thank you for asking!

This past week we headed Downtown to see how the low-water bridge project is progressing.

Much to my boys' delight, we arrived just as concrete was being poured!

Hopefully the pedestrian lane will be open in time for the Dogwood Festival with another lane for vehicles coming soon after.

I never realized how much I used that bridge on errand days! I'm eager for the project to be complete.

Notes from Main Street Siloam Springs, Inc.

I’d like to dwell on for a moment on a subject I admittedly know little about – architecture.

Upon moving to Siloam Springs, I had no framework for distinguishing the reasons why I loved about our downtown – I just felt the sense of place that various architects and investors had created in the visual aesthetics of the buildings. Now I realize that this visual interest created by our procession of storefronts is not an accident – each building has a unique history of attention to detail during design and construction. Each section of each building tells us an important story.

Wide and tall front windows were designed to invite travelers and residents inside. Regularly spaced and attractively framed windows on the second floors provide a sense of order and presence. Decorative cornices cap the buildings with various period styles of architectural ornamentation. Buildings in a row are defined by different heights and storefronts that both create distinction and flow into an appealing line. These buildings, as one expert has described them, “were designed and built to last for centuries.” They were built with the future of our community in mind.

The value of our historic architecture to our community’s heart and to its economic success not been lost upon our city. Main Street Siloam Springs’ Design committee focuses especially on helping business and property owners maintain the sense of permanence and aesthetic appeal of our downtown structures. These volunteers, many of them experts in the field, are developing an Historic Design Guide that will help guide the renovation of these buildings.

Furthermore, Main Street Siloam Springs is now offering the first annual Gloria McEnroe Façade Renovation Grant. Named after a long-time, dedicated board member and Siloam citizen, this matching grant will allocate up to $1000 on a maximum 50/50 matching basis for façade improvements in the Main Street service area. Applications are due no later than Friday, March 25th for review.

Weekend Plans

I don't know about you, but my weekend plans aren't really set yet. I do know I'll be spending some time Downtown. The pastries at the Cafe on Broadway are calling my name! And there's a book I want to look for at Books on Broadway. And I need to find a gift for a friend's upcoming birthday... I guess I do have weekend plans!

Speaking of the Cafe on Broadway, they're hosting live music this Saturday. Check their website for more information. Music starts at 8pm, and the money raised seems to be going toward a good cause. If you're planning on attending, remember to RSVP on Facebook.

And, while you're on Facebook RSVPing for the Cafe on Broadway event, remember to "friend" Fratelli's Wood-Fired Pizza. They typically host a Game Night on Saturday evenings, and details can be found on their page.

If one of your dreams is moving your business downtown (or starting a new one!), this Sunday could be your lucky day. On Tuesday I happened across this sign in front of what used to be the United States Post Office:

It seems the building is up for auction, and this Sunday interested people are welcome to inspect the structure.

I haven't been in the building for a few years, but from what I remember, the interior is unique in a good way. The location is perfect--right in the middle of Broadway Street. If you dream of being a part of Siloam Springs' Downtown, this could be your chance.

I'm sure there are other things happening this weekend as well. Make Downtown a part of your weekend.

Farmer's Market Opening Info

I sure have missed fresh produce this winter. I'm especially eager this year for the Farmer's Market to open for spring. Mark your calendars for Thursday, April 14th, and plan to join us at the park to purchase the first harvests of this Farmer's Market season.

Coming Out of Hibernation

I'm afraid winter got the best of me this year. I gave in to the feelings of hibernation and stuck fairly close to home! Good thing this past week felt like spring! The temporary glimpse of what's to come has inspired me to get back into the downtown swing!

The Walking Trails

We are quite lucky to have miles of paved walking trails in Siloam Springs. The trails wind themselves to the local parks, past schools, around John Brown University, and right through the middle of Downtown.

While the trails are a great for an evening run or a fast-paced morning walk, they are also quite nice for a slow nature hike on a sunny afternoon.

We recently met up with a few friends and set off looking for nature's treasures. We stopped to smell the wild flowers.

And had a snack on one of the newly installed benches.

And then we found something quite exciting!

A turtle had decided to use our trails for his afternoon jaunt!

Errand Fridays

For whatever reason, Fridays seem to be our errand days.

I load up my boys and head Downtown to take care of business.

We usually start with a visit to Arvest. My boys know Friday is popcorn day at the bank!

We drop our letters in the mailbox in front of the old post office.

We head up Broadway Street to pay our utility bill.

And we finish our morning with a treat at the Cafe on Broadway.

Living near Downtown makes errand day easy and fun!

Fall Vegetables at the Farmers' Market

There are only a few more weeks left to visit our Farmers' Market.

Last week we picked up lettuce, butternut squash, and turnips. We roasted the Cheney Farm turnips in olive oil and sea salt at 425 for about 30 minutes, and then we ate them!

Head down now for some fall veggies. The market is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7am-1pm.

We only made it to one event: Dawn Denton's book signing at Books on Broadway.

My two boys enjoyed listening to Ms. Dawn read her book about Ruby and Rocket the hummingbirds.

Dawn's next book in the series will be out this spring and I'm sure Books on Broadway will host another event.
